Grimoire Essentials: Easy Magical Ingredients

Image
Looking to expand your witch's cupboard? Just starting out and feeling pressed for cash? Or just looking for some easy new ideas to use in your magical crafts and charms? I created this post as a means of illustrating how everyday things can become potent magical tools, without breaking the bank. Hope you enjoy! Crushed Eggshell Powder Eggshell powder, sometimes called cascarilla powder in traditions like Santeria, is a simple and easy magical ingredient to come by. It is easy to make. Simply take cracked eggshells and rinse them out to get rid of any leftover goo inside. Set them aside to dry. Once they are completely dry, simply crushed or pound them into a fine powder. A mortar and pestle works well for this, but even a small ceramic cup and a blunt piece of wood or metal can suffice. Once the powder is ground, store in a small container or bottle until needed. The egg is symbolic of fertility and in turn the element of earth. It's qualities are protection, fertility...

Review: Grimoire for the Green Witch by Ann Moura

Image
I recently picked up a copy of "Grimoire for the Green Witch" by Ann Moura at my local bookstore, looking for something new to add to my collection and knowledge base during the spring break holiday. I was a bit reticent about purchasing the book due it is price (19.95 MSRP) and publisher (Llewelyn). But I had some money to burn and the book seemed to contain a lot of info, so I took the jump. I'll start with the overall look and design. The cover, as you can tell, is super cheesy. But I prefer to ultimately let the words inside be the true representation of value. Flipping through the book I saw that it had a very nice simple setup, everything was arranged in the same fashion under simple categories  Like a Grimoire, each page contained single topics instead of bleeding everything together. Fonts are decorative and easy to read. Plus the book is large, so it seemed very reference friendly. The content varies. The first chapter outlines Moura's own philosophy ...

"Neopaganism is a joke"...my response to another village idiot.

Image
I was going to write a review here about a recent book I purchased, but I will save that for another day. Because as I was checking out my dashboard, I found a comment awaiting moderation that I felt needed to be addressed. This comment from's from my post "What is Vanatru?" It is a post I wrote as a means of explaining Vanatru to those who might be unfamiliar with how it differs from Asatru, from my own perspective. This comment comes from, SURPRISE!, a user by the name of Anonymous. You know, the ones the rest of us call cowards? But anyway, here is their lovely and informative comment. " Neopaganism is a joke, and not a particularly elaborate one. You don’t have an unbroken chain of initiation, and some major part of your myths come from non-pagan mythographers. And, indeed, you don’t know how the true pagans interpreted those myths. So, your religion is not legitimate. Come to the Catholic Church, here we have an unbroken chain of initiation, our texts are ...

Not everything NEEDS to be "Cleansed"...

Image
I belong to some groups on Ye Olde Facebook which are geared toward paranormal investigations and in which many people share their own experiences of seeing, feeling, and capturing the spirit world in action. I have been following some of them fairly closely this past week, simply because I been stuck at home due to the lovely Oklahoma weather lately. Anyway, I have noticed that as soon as anyone comes forward with a supposed "entity" in the home, their seems to be  resounding answer of negative comments, about evil and demons and other such nonsense.  The people are always told different ways to cleanse the home to get rid of whatever it may happen to be that they feel has come into their lives or someone attached itself to them. I have to be honest and say that this overwhelming negative response to spirits in the home BOTHERS ME. I've read the experiences and looked at the pictures. I have felt nothing evil or negative from the evidence I have seen. Even...

Keeping it Simple: Pagan/Heathen on a Budget

Image
It seems like there are just as many individuals in the business world catering to those of alternative faiths as there are those practicing them. All in all I think it is a positive, especially with the rise of sites like Etsy and even Amazon which allow authors and craftspeople to sell their wares without the need to deal with outside retailers. I feel it is a positive thing, but there are definitely some instances where one may feel like being a heathen or pagan may get a little expensive, in trying economic times. The abundance of available wares is a good thing, but it is important as well that we can learn how to use what is immediately available to us, and never base our devotion on the size of our altar. So I decided to use this week's post to simple give some of my own tips and techniques for acquiring the things we might need or want, regardless of how large our small our budget might be. I feel this is especially important for me as  Vanatru, practicing an ea...

Condemning Religion with Science: Fundie v. Fundie

Image
You know, I have no problem with Science. I understand well the fact that atheism is an acceptable path for many in the postmodern world. The importance of reason is almost a sacred philosophy to me, even as a pagan. Sometimes it even takes effort for me to reconcile my spiritual beliefs with what I know to be scientifically valid. I keep tabs on a lot of atheist organizations and spokespeople. Richard Dawkins is one of the more well known of these. Anyway I have the Richard Dawkins Foundation page on my Facebook feed, and they do post alot of things I agree with. But some of them are a bit extreme for my taste. One such quote from Dawkins was that science will always corrode religious belief. This I couldn't agree with as a pagan. To be honest I have about as much respect for fundamentalist, dogmatic atheists as I do for Christian fundies. I never really understood why people always insist on comparing SCIENCE v. RELIGION as if the two are somehow indelibly connected as opp...
