Not everything NEEDS to be "Cleansed"...

I belong to some groups on Ye Olde Facebook which are geared toward paranormal investigations and in which many people share their own experiences of seeing, feeling, and capturing the spirit world in action. I have been following some of them fairly closely this past week, simply because I been stuck at home due to the lovely Oklahoma weather lately. Anyway, I have noticed that as soon as anyone comes forward with a supposed "entity" in the home, their seems to be  resounding answer of negative comments, about evil and demons and other such nonsense.  The people are always told different ways to cleanse the home to get rid of whatever it may happen to be that they feel has come into their lives or someone attached itself to them.

I have to be honest and say that this overwhelming negative response to spirits in the home BOTHERS ME. I've read the experiences and looked at the pictures. I have felt nothing evil or negative from the evidence I have seen. Even from a distance, I have always been pretty adept at feeling out the energy of spirits and other beings on film and video, and even feeling out people who are dealing with such events, to see if I feel any negative energy around them. It's sorta my thing, and something I have been coping with since I don't know, when I became self aware.

And you know what I feel coming back most of the time. Not evil, or malevolence, or negative intentions. FEAR. That's what I feel 95% of the time being projected from those who claim to have a spirit in the home. And do you know what I feel most of the time from spirits who choose to take up residence in homes with human company? Not hatred, negative intent, or the desire to inflict pain. What I feel most of the time is LONELINESS.

Now we could discuss for ages the different types of spirit beings which may or not be roaming around with us here on this planet we call EARTH. I have my own ideas on what may exist, just like everyone else. What irks me is how often I hear people claim that they have a "demonic entity" in the home, or share their experiences only to be told that whatever is there is evil and they needs to perform some sort of arbitrary cleansing ritual to get rid of it.

I'll be honest and say that it seems odd to me that if demons exist, which I believe is questionable to begin with, that they would be satisfied spending their days locked within a home terrorizing a family for shits and giggles. I just think that maybe a demon might have better ways of creating chaos in the world than by giving someone's child "night terrors" or sneaking up on people in photographs taken around the house. Yet if we go with popular opinion on paranormal sites and groups, 90% of all entities in homes are demonic and are out to get your children, and need to be swiftly given the boot. Because of course a bit of sage and chanting is going to scare that fella right the fuck out. SMH.

Now back to reality... I will share my experience. I live in a home where things go bump in the night. I live in a home where there is a good chance that you might she a shadow moving down the hall or lights and other electronics might get turned on or off without human intervention. You might here a whisper in your ear at night when you lay down, and you might feel the hairs on your neck prickle up for no reason. Pots and pans might fall off the counter, other things might move of their own accord from time to time. Or like right now as I write this, you might here a phone ring in another room when there is no phone in another room.

And you might be surprised to learn that I like it that way. You might be surprised to learn that I invite them in freely. You might call this place a bed and breakfast for spirits. They are constantly coming and going, and it doesn't bother me in the least. Some stay for a day and others stick around. And 99.9% of the time they are simple spirits of the deceased. Not demons, not monsters, not vampires, just humans who have passed. Spirits who wander. Many of them are lonely, others are simply curious. I've yet to find one that wished to harm anyone. At most I've found some who enjoy scaring people and playing harmless tricks. If they can't follow the ground rules, then they get the boot.

Which is a rare occurrence  I would say happens perhaps once or twice a year at best. That's when I cleanse and renew the wards. It doesn't take much when you remove the element of fear. If anything, the openness I share with spirits usually leads to them assist me in many ways around the house. Lost objects often appear quite suddenly when needed. The place stays relatively tidy even with a four year old around. The atmosphere stays peaceful. And I firmly believe it is my hospitality with the otherside which creates that feeling of peace and goodwill in the home. And those not so pretty things which exist have no place here, they don't even bother. Because they know their are plenty others who are here, and have a vested interest in keeping the peace in this house. It is their home and resting ground. They don't allow it to be polluted.

Which also means that if something not so benevolent sneaks in by chance, they will let me know about it. I can get rid of the naughty bits swiftly and things return to normal quickly. It saddens me really when I think about the amount of fear most have when it comes to the spirit world. These people seem afraid of anything which might remind them of death, and all they don't know. The saddest part is that if they stop cleansing them away and learned to live with them, to know them and feel them, some of that fear might be alleviated. I have more fear in me in regards to those who are alive than those who are deceased. Maybe I am more comfortable with them than the living. I've always been an odd one...

So anyway, here are my thoughts on spirits in the home and what to do about them.

Before you move in to a residence, feel it out for the love of whatever god you might believe in! There are two kinds of spirits in homes. Those who you invite in, and those who were already there.

Cleanse it and ward it before you take up residence, and if you feel there is something there which isn't pretty, find another place to live. It's that simple. If their is an entity attached to a home, good luck turning them out after you move in. Claims of ownership exist in the spirit world too.

Set up ground rules for EVERYTHING which comes into your home. It doesn't have to be a list or anything. Mine is as simple as this...

"All are welcome here who look for rest and peace. This is a house of frith. There will be no fear or malevolence in this house. Only positive energy can enter this home. If you come in be respectful, be quiet, do not scare or harm anyone who resides here in anyway. Those who follow these simple rules are welcome to come in and find a spot. Those who do not follow them will be turned out forever."

Know that from time to time, someone will be naughty. It's not a reason to sterilize the energy in your home with cleansing everything. Usually a warning will do. If not, kick their ass out. Cleanse that which is negative. Don't kick everyone out for the sake of one bad apple. You run the risk of blanking the whole house of any energy with a ritual cleansing, and also run the risk of losing many helpful spirits and wights, not to mention ancestors who might be hanging around. Learn to cleanse with intention. This will make things much easier, less draining, and less time consuming.

In frith,

Cena

  1. I was a Christian for over 50 years before leaving it for Paganism and in my experience (your mileage may vary) demons are the explanation for everything "evil." Within that mindset, there is only good and evil and good comes from "God" and evil comes from Satan. They tend to attribute anything outside of heaven as being demonic as well.

Plus, demonology is a trendy thing, too. We have the Satanic Panic of the 80s that the FBI proved to be totally bogus but it's making a comeback with all the paranormal shows. Especially those shows that have Catholic priests on them.

I agree 100% with your post and plan on sharing it on my facebook page!

  2. Hello Cena,
Thank you for this post, it's just what I needed to hear (/read) regarding to the house I live in. I felt "wrong" thinking of cleansing it from what was already there and everything coming in, your post makes me feel a lot better ^^
Everyone I've asked advice to, towards the stuff going on here, told me to purify it, but your way is actually much cleaner !
(Sorry for the poor English, not my mothertongue).

  3. Kathy, I defo agree with you there. It always seems strange to me how many of those who investigate/ believe in the paranormal are always putting good or evil in a Christian context. I guess it stems as you say from the whole exorcist type propaganda of the 70s and 80s.

Kappa, so glad this helped you out. And your english was spot on. =) My advice would be to let them be for awhile, set up your ground rules, and see how it goes for a few months.

  4. People are afraid of what they do not understand. I agree spirits are rarely "evil". That's not even the word I want to use to describe them, because they aren't really evil IMO. They just aren't a good person. My rule is that if they don't bother me I don't bother them.

Now wake me up in the middle of the night by standing over me, and we might have a problem. Especially if they refuse to talk.
