Grimoire Essentials: Easy Magical Ingredients

Looking to expand your witch's cupboard? Just starting out and feeling pressed for cash? Or just looking for some easy new ideas to use in your magical crafts and charms? I created this post as a means of illustrating how everyday things can become potent magical tools, without breaking the bank. Hope you enjoy!

Crushed Eggshell Powder

Eggshell powder, sometimes called cascarilla powder in traditions like Santeria, is a simple and easy magical ingredient to come by. It is easy to make. Simply take cracked eggshells and rinse them out to get rid of any leftover goo inside. Set them aside to dry. Once they are completely dry, simply crushed or pound them into a fine powder. A mortar and pestle works well for this, but even a small ceramic cup and a blunt piece of wood or metal can suffice. Once the powder is ground, store in a small container or bottle until needed.

The egg is symbolic of fertility and in turn the element of earth. It's qualities are protection, fertility, and creativity. It can be added to any charms of protection or warding, or simply as a stand in for the earth, much like sea salt.

I like to use the powder to ward my house from negative energy. Simply spread it across windowsills and thresholds to keep negative energy away. It can also be used to delineate property lines and creating magical boundaries, much like sea salt. Add it to spells and charms for fertility or creative endeavors.

Rainwater

Rainwater is a simple and easy ingredient to come by. Simply place containers in open areas out of doors during a shower. It is best to store rainwater in amber or dark colored glass bottles in closets or cupboards. Those concerned with impurities or chemicals can boil and strain it through coffee filters after collection, this can also help prevent the growth of bacteria or mold as the water ages.

Rainwater is symbolic of elemental water, and can be used in any magic which needs water. It's qualities are emotion, change, and purification. Add it to charms and spells for purifying, cleansing, health, and emotional stability.

Rainwater is great for boiling herbs in potpourri, particularly herbs for healing and well being. It can also be a great additive to floral waters, just make sure you boil and strain it before use. It can be used as an offering or stand in for water in ritual. Use it in spells and charms to support smooth transitions through periods of change or to promote physical and mental health during times of stress.

On a related note, lightening water is rainwater collected during powerful thunderstorms with lots of lightening. It's qualities include fast changes and great amounts of energy, so be careful you are prepared for that when using it.

Acorns

Acorns are great symbols of fertility, being the seeds of a tree. Their qualities are fertility and creativity. Acorns can also be useful in divination, particularly when painted or engraved with runic characters. They are also good offering to cthonic divinities or forest spirits, wights, and alfar. A walk through any park or forest area can stock you up on acorns.

Pinecones

Pine cones are also readily available in natural areas, and have similar properties to the acorn. However their spikes serve a protective purpose as well, which gives them the magical quality of protection. Three pinecones hanging above one's door protect the threshold and keep out negative spirits and energy. They can also be used in spells or charms of protection, or make them into natural bird feeders with some peanut butter and seeds as an offering to the spirits of birds or the land wights near your home.

Graveyard Dirt

Readily available in almost any area, graveyard dirt is associated heavily with death or ending. It's qualities include banishing, destruction, and deep earth magic. In some traditions graveyard dirt is used primarily in cursing or hex magic, but even the light worker can use graveyard dirt without violating their beliefs.

Collect graveyard dirt in any graveyard. It is definitely advisable to leave some sort of offering to the deceased if the dirt is take from a specific grave area.

Use graveyard dirt in spells and magic for ending conditions or relationships. Bad habits can be buried in graveyard dirt as a means of helping one overcome them. In its darker aspect, graveyard dirt can be used to banish or bind specific individuals from oneself, and it can also be used to curse or hex. I leave you to decide your own uses according to your own morality in this regard.

I think that is enough for time being. I will try and add more of these ingredients periodically for those interested. If you can think of some more easy and accessible magical ingredients, please leave a comment and I will collect the ideas and post more at a later date.

  2. That's some very good advice :) I'd also add all the herbs and plants you can harvest from nature, and using local stones in stead of crystals :)
