Catching the Breeze: Some ideas for Wind Magic
It's been very windy here the past couple days in Oklahoma, which has been positive for me though I'm sure a nuisance for many others. I just happen to love a good strong breeze. I just love to stand outside and feel it blowing around me and whipping my hair about. There is something magically about a strong wind blowing in the wild.
So I thought I would write this post about Wind, and how it can be utilized in spellwork or other such practices. I encourage all of you, regardless of tradition, to do some research on the mythos of wind or air within your tradition and implement that accordingly. The ideas I present here are just general, and directional meanings, etc. of wind with of course be different depending on your tradition or mythological system.
Direction
The direction from which the wind is blowing can be an important element in determining what sort of energy it will best transport at a given time. Keep in mind direction refers to the where it is blowing FROM, not the direction it is blowing TO. Also keep in mind that the wind is always changeable, so it is probably best utilizing for spells and magic of a lighter nature. Keep in mind also that the following symbolism is relevant to the Northern Equator.
North Wind: The north wind is symbolic of dormancy, barreness, cold, darkness, and sometimes death. Death that is, as part of the cycle of the seasons and life, a necessary stage in the cycle of creation. The North Wind can be utilized for destructive spellwork, but use caution here as air perhaps the least stable of elements. The North wind is perhaps better used for blowing away negative energy and emotions, and sweeping away impurities within the home. It can also be used in matters of intensive healing, particularly those which involve an outside influence such as virus, infection, or other parasitic energies.
East Wind: The East wind is symbolic of the celestial realm, intellect, messages, and revitilization. Any matters which involve the mind or ideas are appropriate for East wind magic. The East wind is also symbolic of new beginnings and transformation, as the point by which the celestial bodies first begin to rise, be it the sun, moon, or stars. The East wind can also be utilized in fertility or sexual rites, but as for an emotional love, it is probably not the best choice.
South Wind: The South Wind is symbolic of fire, passion, love, and power. In truth the South Wind is that of such a fiery, electrified nature that it can be utilized in almost any working. It adds a jolt of extra power, especially in those spells which deal with increase. Just be warned that the South Wind's fiery nature can burn as well. Be particularly certain that the spellwork you perform with the South Wind is something you truly want and are prepared to receive.
West Wind: The West wind is symbolic of water, emotion, gentleness, and healing. The West Wind is best utilized for emotional love magic and healing. It also is a good time for fertility rituals, particularly feminine oriented rituals. Tenderness, soothing, comfort, all these are desires which can be helped along by a western wind. Healing of the mind, body, and spirit in a non invasive way is also appropriate. Reflection and meditation can also be aided by the cool, moist Western Wind.
Some Simple Ideas for Wind Magic
To release negativity or a specific problem, you can write or visualize that problem onto a leaf. Then release the leaf to blow away from you in a strong Northern Breeze.
Bells or Chimes can be given an intention. For instance, a small bell can be charged as a call for love and abundance. Each time the bell or chimes ring in the South or West breeze, visualize the sound as a call bringing those things forth in your life.
Flags can be used as prayers or spells. Write or Draw something symbolic of your desire on a small flag. These can be placed in the appropriate wind to either blow away (remove circumstance) or used in a more permanent sense to call things forth (increased/new circumstance).
Meditate outside during a warm Southern Wind for increased insight, removal of negativity, and renewed power.
A nice walk in the rain with a Western Wind could do just the trick if you are looking to increase your fertility or become pregnant. It can also be soothing for a variety of womanly ailments.
Write your problem on a small piece of paper. Shred it into small pieces and release it into the Northern Wind.
