Quartz: Quick and Simple Magical Uses
Quartz, usually the clear variety, is one of the most well known and often incorporated magical gems in modern paganism. It was used extensively throughout history as well. Most of the time, we think of quartz and envision the clear variety, though in reality most of the well known semi precious gems, such as amethyst, tiger's eye, carnelian, citrine, etc. are all different varieties of quartz crystal. For clarity and brevity, this post is about Clear quartz in particular.
Clear quartz has been called the universal power stone throughout the ages, due to it's ability to hold and transmit a wide variety of spiritual and magical energies. It is found all over the world, and this also makes it affordable, which is a plus for practitioners as well. One of the best things about working with clear quartz is that it can be charged for a particular purpose, and once this purpose is done it can be cleansed and recharged again. This makes it a very earth friendly and magic friendly material.
To cleanse quartz of any unwanted energy is a simple process that can be accomplished in a variety of ways. Washing and rinsing clear quartz in running water (natural source) is a common technique. Burying them in the earth for a specific amount of time dependent on the amount of cleansing needed is another. Purification by smudging, submersion in natural sea salt, or running through an open flame are all commonly used techniques. In my personal use, I have found leaving them in sea salt is by far the best technique for me personally.
"Charging" is a modern term some use to refer to the act of filling the crystal with a specific type of spiritual or magical energy. Some believe that the cleansing techniques above can charge a crystal as well as cleansing, for example if a crystal is buried in the ground it will in time be charged with the energy of earth. Many Wiccans who use quartz charge the crystals by leaving them out in the light of full moon, believing this fills them with the feminine energy of Goddess. Others use full sunlight on specific dates and times to charge crystals.
Charging for specific magical purposes can also be accomplished by the practitioner using energy transmission through touch and intent. In this way, the practitioner directs a specific energy connected to a purpose into the crystal. The methods for doing this vary considerable depending on ones beliefs and techniques for performing magic acts.
For me, quartz crystal is a magical tool which is priceless. It's ability to hold and pick up energy makes it invaluable. Not to mention, a cleansed piece of crystal quartz can be one of the simplest and quickest ways to incorporate magic into our daily lives.

Some quick and easy tips for using quartz, based on my own experiences
- A quartz point is extremely useful when reading tarot, when pointed upward it helps clarify the reading and focus answers and questions
- Bits of quartz in herbal sachets and charms serve as built in energy storage unit, transmitting wanted energy and collecting the unwanted. Great for bath sachets and teas as well
- A quartz point inside the pillowcase was a good friend's effective home remedy for nightmares and disturbed sleep habits
- A piece of quartz in the third eye area can be a powerful help when attempting trance and or meditation
- a small piece of quartz can act as an effective worry stone, helping to calm our fears throughout the day when stashed in a pocket.
- a quartz wand can be one of the best wands and/or wand tips for directing energy though the dominant, or projecting hand.
- A piece of quartz can be "programmed" to collect and disperse negative energy within the home and vehicles
Finally, word of warning. When you work with quartz stone, be away that though it can be reused many times, they all have a shelf life when it comes to energy. Before using any stone or crystal, weigh it in the hands and feel its energy. If it seems cloudy or murky, or in the worse case gives you a bad vibe, it is time to get rid of it. The best method for this is to simply take it to a natural location and bury it or leave it as an offering back from whence it came. Sometimes a stone is simply worn from overuse, and other times a particular energy can become "locked in" to a stone and become unable to cleanse or charge again. The danger here is that these energies can be negative. Sometimes if a stone is simply in a certain place or with a certain person, it can become inexorably programmed to their energy. NEVER charge a stone that does not feel pure, and ABSOLUTELY NEVER use a stone that does not feel RIGHT. As with any and all magic objects, if you do so, you will regret it, in my experience.

When it comes to quartz in particular, this has not been a significant problem for me. I have used quartz for years in my practice, and only once or twice have I felt a bad vibe or depletion from a piece of clear quartz. I encourage anyone to use quartz in their practice, for me it is both an easy and invaluable magical tool.
