Found Resource! Comparative Translation Guides for Eddas
While looking for some translations of the Skirnismal for an upcoming post on Freyr, I stumbled upon an amazing collection of resources I just had to blog about for all my heathen and Vanatru friends and followers.
Apparently the author of some self published translations of Beowulf as well as other Norse derived writings made available to the public on his website some of his personal pdfs created while doing research for his new novel. The author himself is R. Scot Johns, who has written a Beowulf translation/novellization as well as a comprehensive study guide to the Beowulf epic, and is now working on a book called the Ring Saga, also derived from Norse sources. Anyone interested in the author can check him out here at http://authoradventures.blogspot.com/ his personal blog.
I have personally not read any of his work, but I was thrilled to find a whole page of free downloadable comparative study sheets of some of the most well known of Norse Myth and Saga, including the Voluspa, the Flyting of Loki, etc. These guides are side by side, line by line comparisons of two or more various common translations, making it sooooooo much easier to compare translations than if one must whip out two or three books and go through comparing line by line. These study sheets are just like having someone do all the hard work for you.
The also include extensive footnotes at the end of the translations which explain name meanings, translation conflicts, and other important information on specific lines of the text. In short, I think these studies are fucking brilliant, and kudos to Mr. Johns for making them absolutely free when I know many, including myself, who would pay good money for a compendium of these guides!
So for anyone wanting to take a peek at the format, I am including a link to the Voluspa study HERE and the entire list of Guides and Research materials at fantasycastlebooks.com Ring Saga Research page.
SO there it is, enjoy and let me know if you like these as much as I do. I will be adding them to the Resources page as well for easy access.

Cena,
ReplyDeleteI'm pleased to see you've found these resources, and hope they prove useful. I, too, wish someone had done this earlier, but as there were none to be found, I undertook the task myself.
I take your comment to heart concerning the compendium, as I have given it some consideration myself. Were it not for the heavy demands required of my primary efforts at writing and illustrating The Ring Saga, I would have done so before now. But look for it to appear at some point in the future.
Regards,
R. Scot Johns
Thank you! I am glad to see you didnt mnd my posting your work here, and defo look forward to that compendium if you decide to create it in the future.
