Simple Protection Techniques

I find that in talking about seidr, shamanisms, and astral travel in general, there is little discussion about how we protect ourselves as we journey forth into unknown territory. One often hears it proclaimed that the need for protection is great, the spirits can be dangerous and malevolent in nature, one must know what they are doing, etc. But outside of basic warding and protection techniques, I haven't found much information on how to shield oneself from harm when one fares forth.
One reason perhaps is the perceived need for secrecy when it comes to preserving traditions or personal insights. Another perhaps is the reluctance to accept spirit communication as real, and the fear of being labeled mentally unstable or ill. Another is simply self doubt of what one experiences, and the internal conflict between what is imagined and what is "real."
My dedication to Freyja and the Vanir has led me on an interesting path, which is enabling me to let go of reluctance and become open to experiences that for most of my life I have tried to push away from or deny. I have found this so rewarding, but being open leads one to the need for one to protect themselves and monitor the flood of wights which come and go.
I did some research into mediumship and protective techniques, since the majority of spirits I find myself coming into contact with are the deceased. I thought I would list some of simple techniques here, for anyone looking for similar information.

White Light
One technique I have found mentioned most often is the use of white light, or energy to create a barrier of protection around oneself, and prevent spiritual attack. The technique is rather simple for those with basic experience visualizing and manipulated energy forces. One simply creates and egg shaped spear of white light to completely surround the body and aura, for the purpose of keeping spirits or other entities from attacking or possessing or leaving any residual negative energy upon the medium. The white light symbolizes purity, cleansing, protection, and is usually associated with some form of divine power or deity.

Worry Balloon
The worry balloon is a simple technique for getting rid of any negative energy that has penetrated the aura or become attached to the medium. It is another simple visualization, in which one uses a deflated balloon, sends the negative energy into the balloon and fills it, then releases that energy into the universe, simply letting the balloon fly away and disperse the energy. This technique can be used by anyone who wishes to cleanse themselves of negative energy.

Blue Shield
The blue shield is a shield of energy which is most commonly used to deflect negativity and keep others, be they human or spirit, from being able to feed or sap your energy. The shield is blue, corresponding to the throat chakra, the "seat of will."

Earth Grounding
I won't go into specific detail here, grounding and centering is a technique already know by most pagans, and a very effective way of cleansing oneself and can also be used to create a protection barrier around oneself.

Mirror Technique
The mirror technique is my personal favorite. Using the mirror technique, one visualizes piece by piece that their being is covered with a shield of mirrors. It is almost an invisibility visualization, in that one simple becomes a reflection of what is around itself, any spirits will be naturally repelled and any energy sent to you will simply be sent back to its source. It is important to keep in mind though that this means positive energy will be blocked as well for as long as the energy of the visualization is intact. This is a technique best used for periods of rest or when one wants to be alone, or if one is set on protecting a secret from specific individuals.

These are just a few simple techniques that can be used to protect oneself in the astral realm, not to mention in the mundane world as well.

Love and Light
